Cristina Castro Moral of Sombras Blancas Art & Design is not afraid of a challenge. Whether it's launching her own company in her early twenties, or starting that company in a country with a foreign language, her determination and willingness to try have helped her to succeed. Read on to see how Cristina approaches hurdles within her company, and her life, and what she loves about living on her own terms as an entrepreneur.
Hello!
Hi! My name is Cristina, I’m 26 years old and I am from and live in Spain. I studied industrial design and classical guitar and I started learning the basics of graphic design at college. I’ve never stopped since then. I am now the designer behind Sombras Blancas Art & Design.
Tell us what you do!
I offer branding services for small businesses and startups at an affordable price, mostly logo and website design but also marketing graphics and custom illustrations. I’ve always gravitated towards creative and artsy activities so this job is a dream come true for me. I do all my work online, communicating with my clients via email. That gives me the ability to work with people worldwide and being location independent. This adventure started some years ago when a friend of mine asked me to create a logo for a fair trade campaign he was preparing on our university. It was then when I realized I wanted to take it seriously. I started selling my premade logos and services on Etsy as a part-time occupation back in 2012. I’m now working as a full-time freelance designer and I’m so glad I took this route.
What do you love most about the lifestyle?
I love all aspects of what I do but I specially enjoy being in contact and working side by side with amazing business owners from whom I learn a lot every single day. Being able to organize my day as I want and to work on the go are also great advantages. I normally spend most of the week days at my home office but I like taking my laptop to a nice coffee shop from time to time.
Latest project
I normally work on many different projects at the same time. Right now, I’m creating a logo for an event management company, a logo and website for a holiday home in Italy, customizing pre-designed logos for several small business owners from Etsy and working on a website design for a 13-year-old girl who is starting her own shop and whose mother has hired my services. Additionally, I work with regular clients on marketing graphics, updates, website maintenance, etc. You can see some of my recently finished projects at my portfolio http://www.sombrasblancasdesign.com/work/

Start before you are ready.
Why?
Because there is no better way to learn all those things you have no clue how to accomplish. Researching and planning are great but they will never give you as much experience as trying by yourself.
Most inspiring person you have ever met so far and why?
It may sound cliché but those who have inspired me the most throughout this journey are my parents. Since I was little, they impressed on me a strong set of values such as working as hard as I can and being independent. That's what has driven me to where I am now.
One piece of advice you would give your younger self
Don’t be afraid of stepping out of the beaten path and taking the road less traveled.
Bravest thing you have ever had to do?
Trying to make a living online in a language that is not my mother tongue. I feel super comfortable with the situation now but it was pretty scary at the beginning!
