The High Value Gain Of Working With My VA Was Momentous

Chris Ball is Co-Founder & CEO of AdventureHoney. Throughout his twenties, Chris lived, travelled and evaded death in 50 countries across six continents. He lives and breathes adventure travel!

He started AdventureHoney as an online marketplace where travelers search and book adventure tours and activities direct with operators. His team checks the tours and tour operators, and help adventure-seekers to find tours that are safe and exciting.

The experiences are curated by real travelers with 25% of proceeds invested into AdventureHoney’s Changemaker Program. The program is designed to empower local entrepreneurs in South East Asia with social business ideas, thereby leveraging travel to deliver local solutions for local problems.

What were you looking for in a VA?

  • Web research for the business
  • Competitor analysis
  • Finding tour operators
  • Allow him time to focus on more high value tasks that cannot be outsourced

What inspired you to start hiring virtually?

AdventureHoney is the only place where you can find adventure tours and activities that have been added to our website by fellow travelers. When a traveler sees something they like, they can then book that tour or activity direct with the operator. For example, you’re in Chiang Mai, Thailand and you’re keen to go and do something wild. You jump on AdventureHoney and you book an ATV jungle safari for the day or go zip lining and white water rafting.

When did you start hiring virtual help?

I started using virtual help before AdventureHoney launched. I had a VA in Hong Kong help with web research for the business for everything from competitor analysis to finding tour operators.

What were some of the challenges? How did you overcome them?

The greatest challenge is bad communication. When I’m not really clear with regard to exactly what I want, when I want it and how I want it presented, then it’s unlikely I’ll get what I want. So, the key to using a virtual assistant is to explain everything so that a 10 year old would know what to do. That way you both know what is expected.

How has hiring virtually supported your business and you personally?

It’s great for the business as we have access to an affordable labor source to take care of remedial tasks and help get us established. It’s great for me as it frees my time to focus on more high value tasks that cannot be outsourced.
