Starting your own company takes a lot of courage. Entrepreneur and owner of Ace WorkGear UK Sam Williamson knows this well. When he left his job to start his online construction safety equipment company, he had only enough savings to live for about 2 months. So, Sam relied on hard work to make his dreams work, and now, he's living the entrepreneurial life he had longed for! Sam shares some insights into his experience below, and his advice to others looking to start their own business: Don't overthink it.
Hello! I’m Sam, I come from Bonnie, Scotland and I’ve lived here all of my life.
Tell us what you do!
I run Ace WorkGear UK (http://www.aceworkgear.com), which is an ecommerce site selling construction safety gear. I have a small storage unit where I keep all of my stock but most of my sales are through affiliate programmes with suppliers.
How did you get started as an entrepreneur?
I was involved with Internet marketing for a while at university when I started to help a friend out with his blog. I was running advertisements on Google for him and he was getting some good traffic to his website without having to invest too much. I was studying construction at the time, and quickly decided that I wanted to try and build a website related to my studies that could help me earn some extra income. The site started from there and although I kept it on the back burner for about 6 years after university, by the time I revisited it I had learned a huge amount about the industry and felt like I could create my own business.
What do you love most about the lifestyle?
Essentially I have a list of things that I need to do by the end of each day, and it’s up to me to decide when I complete them. I love that freedom. I would go crazy if I didn’t have the business but at the same time my work doesn’t consume my life like it does for many other people.
We’ve been trying to grow our social media presence. I basically rely on Internet traffic for 90% of my sales and most of that is coming from Google, but it would be nice to diversify and try to generate some sales from social media too.
Don’t overthink it.
You’ll always talk yourself out of it.
Most inspiring person you have ever met so far and why?
I once met a guy who had survived cancer and lost a leg, but still went skydiving every 2 weeks. Some people are just incredible.
One piece of advice you would give your younger self
Learn as much as you can about the Internet and web development (a regret of mine)
Bravest thing you have ever had to do?
Handing in my notice at work to pursue my own business. I had enough savings to last me for about 2 months, so it had to work.
